The Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at U-MONS positions itself as an urban and collective catalyst. Designed as an open, multifunctional hall, it connects existing neighborhoods and provides flexible spaces for teaching, research, and student life.
The building traverses the city, linking neighborhoods through “urban gaps” that activate public and semi-public spaces. A new iconic entrance on Rue d’Havre and the brick paving create a dialogue with the city. The FA+U is conceived as a unifying element rather than an isolated monument, promoting fluidity and urban vitality.
Spaces are open and modular, allowing functions to be easily adapted over time. Workshops, circulation areas, and generous volumes can be configured as needed, ensuring continuity between teaching, research, and communal life.
Circulation areas and the central foyer are designed as meeting and sharing spaces. The two-story library visually and physically connects teachers and students, offering a focused environment while encouraging collaboration.
The central foyer acts as a “third teacher,” linking workshops, offices, the library, and the multipurpose hall. Its double-height space and tiered staircase encourage movement, social interaction, and occasional events. The corridors accommodate furniture and exhibitions, while the translucent façade provides natural light and privacy from neighboring buildings.
